DraftKings Early MLB Picks For September 15

There are only two afternoon games today. Only one pitcher tops $6,000, so this is a thin slate. This is a day on DraftKings where we try to pick which pitchers will hurt us the least, and try to guess which hitters will capitalize the most. Let’s check the past stats for some help in that area!

NOTE: these picks are based solely on statistics. Some players have never faced their opponents, or have very little experience against them. I am not saying that none of those are good picks. The highest scorer of the day could be someone with no experience against his opponent. This is based on statistical analysis only. If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science. The best lineups usually have a mix of proven stats and hot players. Check out this post from Matt McGarvey for great tips about whether to use a hot player in DFS or not.

    Best Bets:

Mike Clevinger ($5,800): Remember when I said stick with who will hurt you least? It appears to be Clevinger that will hurt us less. The White Sox are hitting a solid .258 against him in 31 at bats with seven strikeouts. The five runs scored is concerning, but three of them were on a Brett Lawrie homer. He wont have to deal with Lawrie this time around.

Hector Santiago ($8,700): Santiago has been mostly a mess since joining the Twins, but he has settled down lately. The Tigers are only hitting .226 against Santiago in 115 at bats, but they have knocked in 14 runs. The 27 strikeouts keeps Santiago in the upper tier of the short slate this afternoon though. He is the only pitcher going that has a shot at six or more strikeouts. That alone makes him worth the risk.

    Honorable Mention:

Mike Pelfrey ($5,300): If you can get around the ugly .340 batting average that his former teammates have off of him in 47 at bats, the rest of the numbers aren’t bad. The Twins only have four runs with six strikeouts. However, with that many runners on base, it really ups the risk of using him.

James Shields ($4,800): The Indians are only hitting .229 against Shields in 214 at bats, but they have scored 22 runs. The 57 strikeouts is respectable, but nothing about this season has been respectable for Shields. He is 5-17 with a 6.01 ERA and 1.63 WHIP. Past stats have to be discounted when the present ones are that terrible.

Mike Napoli ($4,300) is 7-27(.259) with two walks, a double, two homers, and five RBI against James Shields. Carlos Santana ($5,100) is 8-33(.242) with three walks, two doubles, a homer, and three RBI off of Shields. Lonnie Chisenhall ($3,800) only has two hits in 14 at bats, but one of them is a solo homer. Jason Kipnis ($4,900) is 6-23(.261) with four walks, three doubles, and a RBI.

Joe Mauer ($4,400) is 4-9 with a double, a homer, and two RBI against Mike Pelfrey. If Miguel Sano ($4,200) is in the lineup, play him! Sano is 3-4 with two walks, a double, a homer, and two RBI against Pelfrey.

Todd Frazier ($4,000) is 2-4 with a walk and a solo homer against Mike Clevinger.

Miguel Cabrera ($4,500) is 4-16 with four walks, two homers, and four RBI against Hector Santiago. J.D. Martinez ($4,600) has four hits in 12 at bats with a double, two homers, and four RBI. Justin Upton ($4,200) is 2-5 with a walk, a homer, and two RBI off of Santiago.
