Cardinals fill quarterback void with Sam Bradford

PHOENIX -- The Arizona Cardinals have found their replacement for Carson Palmer at quarterback.

A person with knowledge of the situation said Sam Bradford and the Cardinals have agreed to a one-year, $20 million contract with a second-year option, also for $20 million. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because contracts cannot be made public until Wednesday.

Bradford, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 draft, is known for his strong and accurate arm but he has struggled with injuries. He joins a team in dire need of a quarterback.

There had been no QBs on the Arizona roster since the retirement of Palmer and the departure of free agents Drew Stanton and Blaine Gabbert.

Bradford, 30, has appeared in 80 games -- all as a starter -- for the St. Louis Rams, Philadelphia and Minnesota. He's completed 63 percent of his passes for his career, 72 percent the past two seasons in Minnesota.

In other roster moves, the Cardinals announced that they have released running back Adrian Peterson after a half-season in the desert that included a pair of impressive games and a season-ending injury. They also tendered a one-year contract offer to restricted free agent defensive lineman Xavier Williams.

Peterson, a seven-time All-Pro running back, began last season with New Orleans but was dealt to the Cardinals after barely playing for the Saints.

He rushed for 134 yards in a win over Tampa Bay and 159 in a win over San Francisco. In six games, he gained 448 yards on 129 carries for Arizona before being sidelined with a neck injury.

Peterson's release was not unexpected, with David Johnson returning from injury and expected to fill the primary running back spot.

Peterson, who turns 33 next week, ranks 12th in the NFL in career rushing with 12,276 yards.

Williams (6-2, 309) played in 11 games (one start) and totaled 25 tackles, three for loss, a half-sack and a forced fumble in 2017.
