Star quarterback Tony Romo is back practicing in pads for the Dallas Cowboys.

On August 25th, the Dallas Cowboys lost veteran signal-caller Tony Romo to a lower back injury, when he took a hit from Seahawks defensive end Cliff Avril in the second quarter of their preseason game in Seattle. Since that time, Romo has been watching from the sidelines as Cowboys’ rookie quarterback sensation Dak Prescott has led Dallas to a 5-1 record.

With a mostly media-driven quarterback controversy looming in Big D, people around the nation have been wondering what the Cowboys will do when Romo is indeed cleared for game time action.

On Wednesday, we got a little bit closer to finding out that decision when Romo was seen in uniform at practice with his teammates for the first time this regular season. Romo was seen throwing passes and participating in some individual drills, but it is important to note, that he is still not slated to start this week against Philadelphia.

According to a report from CowboysHQ.com’s Mike Fisher, sources are telling him that “Romo’s issue now isn’t more healing of the broken bone in his back, but rather the conditioning that it takes to allow him mobility and fluidity in the pocket.”

All indications seem to be pointing towards either his earliest possible return date coming against the Cleveland Browns a week from this Sunday, or probably more likely, against the Pittsburgh Steelers in two weeks.

It is still too premature to say whether or not the Cowboys actually have a quarterback controversy brewing in the locker room. Only Jerry and Stephen Jones actually have an inkling into that thought process. However, what we do know is that there are no problems with the players, that much remains clear to those who are affiliated with the organization.

If Dak Prescott leads the Cowboys to two more wins, Dallas may not have a choice but to role with the rookie. It would make him 7-1 as a starter in Romo’s absence, which is one of the best win/loss records for a rookie in history, and would make Romo the most overqualified back up in the NFL. Right now though, that decision is still weeks away, and everyone in the locker room, including Prescott, is elated to see Romo back on the practice field.
