The Knee Jerk Reaction: Redskins 27 -- Bengals 27
Penalties, red zone failures, and missed kicks doom the Redskins as they tie the Bengals in London, 27-27.
The Washington Redskins went 1-4 in the red zone Sunday, committed 15 penalties, and missed a 34-yard game-winning field goal on Sunday in a 27-27 overtime tie against the Cincinnati Bengals in front of an announced crowd of 84,488 people at Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday.
The tie was the Redskins’ 28th all-time and their first tie since Nov. 23, 1997, when the team tied the New York Giants, 7-7. The Redskins are now 25-15-2 all-time in overtime games.
The Redskins stand at 4-3-1 and now enter the halfway point of a season above .500 for the first time since 2008 (6-2).

What went right
The passing game was sharp today. Quarterback Kirk Cousins completed 38-of-56 passes for 458 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. According to the Washington Redskins media department, his 38 completions set a team record, surpassing the previous mark of 33 set by Cousins (Oct. 25, 2015) and Jason Campbell (Nov. 18, 2007). Cousins’ career-high 458 passing yards were the second-most in a single game in team history, trailing only Brad Johnson’s 471-yard performance on Dec. 26, 1999.
In addition, Cousins’ 56 attempts were a career-high and were the second-most all-time in a single game in team history, just short of the 58 attempts by Jay Schroeder on Dec. 1, 1985. Sunday’s game was the second 400-yard passing game of Cousins’ career.
Wide receiver Jamison Crowder caught a career-high nine receptions for 107 yards with one touchdown, his third career 100-yard receiving game. Tight end Jordan Reed finished with nine receptions and 99 receiving yards. Tight end Vernon Davis hauled in five receptions for 93 yards.
If Reed stays healthy and Crowder continues to blossom, the Redskins’ passing game has a bright future.
What went wrong
Penalties — 15 of them for 106 yards. Fifteen penalties in a game might happen in the preseason or on opening day but not in week 8.
The Redskins also continued their season-long red zone woes — they went 1 for 4 in red zone opportunities.
Kicker Dustin Hopkins missed two field goals, including a game-winning attempt in overtime. The snap looked a little high but punter Tress Way pulled the snap down in time.
