Reports: Chiefs' Charles out for season

Published Sep. 18, 2011 1:00 a.m. ET

The Kansas City Chiefs' star running back Jamaal Charles is out for the season after tearing the ACL in his left knee in the Chiefs' 48-3 loss to the Detroit Lions Sunday, according to multiple reports.

Charles's knee buckled after he tried to extend a three-yard run closer to a first-down marker midway through the first quarter. He was carted off the field soon after the injury.

Charles, 24, ran for 1,467 yards last season and was selected for the Pro Bowl. The injury comes one week after the Chiefs lost star safety Eric Berry for the year with a knee injury.

The Chiefs made the playoffs last year but have been outscored 89-10 in two losses to start the 2011 season.
