Report: Doctor says Andrew Luck's injuries typical of a car crash

Published Nov. 11, 2015 2:04 p.m. ET

The injuries Andrew Luck is suffering from are unusual for an athlete and are reportedly more consistent with car crash victims, according to an Indianapolis doctor.

Luck is expected to miss two to six weeks with a lacerated kidney and partially torn abdominal muscle, Dr. Lewis Jacobson, chief of trauma at St. Vincent Trauma Center in Indianapolis, said this is not normal for an athletic injury.

“We most commonly see this kind of injury associated with motor vehicle crashes or motorbike crashes,” Jacobson said, via the Indianapolis Star’s Stephen Holder. “We do see about a half-dozen per year related to contact sports. It’s just not very common.

“The kidney is protected by deep muscle and the ribcage. It would take a direct hit to cause this kind of injury.”

Jacobson also said that rest and preventing further injury were extremely important, and any sort of re-injury could complicate things.

Luck certainly did take a direct hit from Danny Trevathan (video here). Given what happened, such an unusual injury actually makes some sense.
