No. 1 draft pick Jared Goff will be inactive for Rams' opener

Jared Goff, named the Rams' No. 3 quarterback despite being drafted No. 1 overall in April, will be inactive to start the season, coach Jeff Fisher announced Tuesday.

Goff struggled in the preseason, so second-year QB Sean Mannion will back up Case Keenum when the Rams open the season Monday at San Francisco. It's common for teams to deactivate the third-string QB to open up a roster spot, and that's what Fisher will do.

So while No. 2 pick Carson Wentz will start for the Eagles in Week 1, the fact that Goff is being brought along slowly by the Rams doesn't mean he won't work out.

Fisher even said Goff could be activated in place of Mannion for Week 2.

"I just want him to feel and sense and absorb the pressures of Week 1," Fisher told NFL Network. "He's going to be a great player. As we've said from Day 1, we're not rushing him. We don't have to rush it. I'm really happy with where he is right now. It's unfair to compare him to anybody else. I know Philly has got their situation; it's a little different. ... Jared is in a good place right now. He's done some really good things, so I'm really pleased with his progress."
