Jets' Smith expects a QB competition next summer

Published Dec. 16, 2013 8:17 p.m. ET

New York Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith anticipates another training camp competition for the starting job next summer.

The struggling Smith acknowledges Monday that he hasn't lived up to his own expectations during a mostly rocky first NFL season in which the Jets have gone 6-8.

The second-round draft pick, who has 10 touchdowns and 21 interceptions, says he expects to be in ''full competition with myself and every other guy who's in camp.''

Smith was in a close competition with Mark Sanchez this preseason, but became the Jets' starter after Sanchez suffered a season-ending shoulder injury.

Smith, whose 2,642 yards passing are a franchise rookie record, says ''we'll see'' when asked if he has proven to the front office that he should be the starting quarterback next season.
