Jason Peters named 14th-best player in PFF's Top 101 of 2014
Philadelphia Eagles left tackle Jason Peters has always been one of the NFL's most gifted athletes, but he has taken his game to the next level in Chip Kelly's unique offensive scheme. Kelly's up tempo scheme best utilizes Peters' ability to get to the second level and take out linebackers in the running game. Although offensive line don't often receive accolades, on Monday, Peters was named the 14th-best player overall in 2014 according to Pro Football Focus.
Peters was exceptional as a pass blocker, and in the running game there was not a single offensive tackle who won more consistently than Peters.
Pro Football Focus' mission is to provide an accurate assessment of each individual NFL player based on the game charting of every play of every game. Here is how they broke down why Peters was named their No. 14 overall player in 2014.
This was always on the cards the way Peters finished the 2013 season. A fantastic pass blocker (just one game graded negatively in this regard all year) who allowed one or fewer pressures in eight games, it’s his run blocking that sets him apart from other tackles. He’s more active and more dominant than his peers with a rare capability to get an in-game highlight reel with his excellence.
Best Performance: Week 9, PHI @ HST, +6.0
Key Stat: Had the highest run blocking grade of all left tackles.
Peters will have to deal with a little turmoil in 2015. He will be protecting for a new quarterback and opening up holes for two new running backs. More importantly, the lineman he plays next to may change at any point before the start of the 2015 season. Incumbent starting left guard Evan Mathis is currently holding out in search of a new contract. Despite all the new surroundings, Peters is a great bet to cash in on another dominant season in an offensive scheme that was built for what he brings to the table.
