Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson plans to push teammate Golden Tate

Published Jul. 21, 2015 1:19 p.m. ET

Calvin Johnson might be the best wide receiver in the league, but his Detroit Lions teammate, Golden Tate, was the more productive pass-catcher last season. Tate caught 28 more passes for 254 more yards. It's worth noting, however, that Johnson played in three fewer games and still caught four more touchdown passes.

Johnson isn't jealous of Tate's surging success, though. In fact, Megatron told Lions senior writer Tim Twentyman that he'd like to help his teammate reach new heights.

"I hope the young kid can put up more (numbers)," Johnson said of Tate, via the Lions' official website. "But I'm going to push him though."

This altruistic attitude will help the Lions field a balanced offense. Last season, both Johnson and Tate eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards. Detroit's top two receivers should have a goal to replicate that production in 2015.
