Colt McCoy and Kirk Cousins competing for Redskins' backup QB spot
Head coach Jay Gruden is saying all of the right things when it comes to Robert Griffin III. The Redskins' coach is impressed with what he's seen from Griffin this offseason, and he's doing his best to instill an air of confidence around Griffin. Last week, Gruden confirmed that Griffin will be the starter when he referred to teammates Colt McCoy and Kirk Cousins as two players who are competing for the second and third quarterback spots.
“Both of them, like I said before, have had a taste of the starting quarterback job in the NFL and they both want it real bad,” Gruden said, per Pro Football Talk. “They’re doing an excellent job at competing every day. It’s killing them on the inside, I know it. They’re competing for the backup job right now, but, they are doing an excellent job and you can see them all progressing at a good rate.
“Those are two great guys to have on your football team and I would feel I have no problems letting either one of them be two or three. We’ve just got to let it play out though.”
Griffin has looked solid this offseason without the pads, but when the pads come on, we will get at true look at how much he really has improved. If he reverts back to his poor footwork and mechanics, the winner of the backup quarterback battle between McCoy and Cousins could end up meaning a whole lot more.
