WNBA's Glory Johnson-Griner, Brittney Griner are having a baby

Published Jun. 4, 2015 4:32 p.m. ET

Almost a month after the WNBA's Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson got married, Glory Johnson-Griner has announced she's pregnant.

The Tulsa Shock have announced that Johnson-Griner will sit out the 2015 WNBA season after consulting with her doctor as a result.

"We are excited for Glory and Brittney and wish them the best in the upcoming year with the birth of their first child," Shock president Steve Swetoha said. "We look forward to seeing Glory back in a Shock uniform in 2016."

Johnson-Griner had recently told Sports Illustrated that she and Griner wanted to start a family.

Earlier on Thursday, the Tulsa Shock forward had posted this announcement on her Instagram account:

"It has always been a dream of mine to start a family with someone I love," Johnson-Griner, 24, said in a statement via FTW. "Being a professional athlete that plays year round, there is never a perfect time to get pregnant without putting my career on hold.

"The entire process, from learning our fertility options, to making the sacrifices necessary nine months before this child is born, is merely preparing me to become a great wife and an even better mother. The hardest part is sitting out this WNBA season, being away from my loving teammates, and not being able to be on the court and play for our devoted fans.

"Right now, I not only have my health to worry about, but also the health of this little one resting inside me. Rest assured, I will be back next season, stronger and more ready to play then ever!"

Griner plays for the WNBA defending champion Phoenix Mercury. The duo were married less than a month after Johnson and Griner were arrested on domestic violence-related charges at their Phoenix-area home.

Johnson-Griner and Griner were both suspended for seven games by the WNBA after their arrests. Johnson said last week she is planning to appeal the suspension, saying her lawyer is ready if further action is needed.

With Johnson-Griner missing the season, her suspension wouldn't start until next year.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
