Spurs' Popovich takes jab at Cavaliers after big loss in Golden State
The San Antonio Spurs were trounced by 30 points against the Golden State Warriors on Monday night. It was their sloppiest game of the season; they turned it over 25 times and 13 times in the first half. So gross.
The Warriors do this to just about everybody, but the Spurs aren't everybody. They were expected to compete in this one and they didn't. The same thing happened a few days ago to another contender, the Cleveland Cavaliers. They responded by firing David Blatt and replacing him with Tyronn Lue.
That move didn't sit well with other head coaches across the NBA, and Popovich didn't mince words when given an opportunity to share his opinion.
Of course, because it's the Spurs and they have a sense of humor about these things, San Antonio's general manager had a quip of his own (via San Antonio Express-News):
Told of that, R.C. Buford had his own line:
"We'll see how Wednesday goes."
This is subtle shade from the Jedi Master of shade throwing. Blatt was let go for several different reasons, but Cleveland's loss to Golden State gave the front office a convenient excuse to hand him a pink slip.
It felt wrong then and it's wrong now. Blatt wasn't the problem—the Cavaliers are 31-12—and firing him reminded everyone how unstable that organization truly is. The Spurs, meanwhile, are solid as stone. They didn't let Popovich go after he went 17-47 in his first year on the job. Their patience paid off.
Cleveland has no patience, and it begs the question: If they don't win a title this season, who's next to go?
