Should Pelicans' ownership keep Williams for next two seasons?
If New Orleans didn't qualify for the postseason, Monty Williams would no longer be its head coach.
Instead, not only did they make the playoffs, but the Pelicans were competitive against the league's best team, and for that reason The Times-Picayune's Jimmy Smith believes Williams deserves to stay on board for at least two more seasons.
"Williams has one year remaining on his contract and a team option beyond next year. What the Pelicans should do, and soon, is announce they're picking up that option for the 2016-17 season, thus endorsing the work Williams did this year in improving the team's record by 11 games and giving him an additional year of job security that he unquestionably earned."
There's no need for the Pelicans to lock themselves into a coach who they were so close to firing just a few weeks ago (with good reason). It remains a tricky situation for both sides to navigate. Stay tuned.
