Formerly the Dakota Wizards, the team was purchased by the Golden State Warriors in 2011, becoming their D-League affiliate. The team was moved to their current home in Santa Cruz in 2012, playing their first home game at Kaiser Permanente Arena in December of that year.
Since then, the Surf City Warriors have made three NBA D-League Finals appearances, culminating in a title win in 2015. The team finished with a 19-31 W/L record the following year. This season, the team has started 2-7.
