Report: Lakers sign international star Marcelo Huertas
A somewhat crowded Los Angeles Lakers backcourt is about to add one more member.
Yahoo Sports/FOX Sports 1 NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski reports Brazilian guard Marcelo Huertas, a six-year veteran of the Spanish ACB for Barcelona, has agreed to a one-year deal with the Lakers.
Huertas has spent the past four years in Spain, helping lead Barca to three consecutive Euroleague semifinal appearances. He averaged 7.4 points and 4.5 assists last season, and he shot 46 percent from the field and 88 percent from the free throw line during his time with the team. He's also served as the Brazilian point guard in numerous international competitions, including the 2012 Olympics.
Huertas told Wojnarowski in April that he planned to play in the NBA for the 2015-16 season:
"There's so much more space in the NBA," Huertas said. "It’s not like Europe now, where you have one guy full-time in the paint. Space is harder to come by. One of my strengths is playing in the pick-and-roll, finding open guys and making shots in the mid-range game off the dribble."
The question for Huertas and the Lakers is where the team will find playing time for the veteran. It could be one more indication that coach Byron Scott is serious about playing Kobe Bryant at small forward for long stretches, potentially even as a starter; if D'Angelo Russell and Jordan Clarkson start in the backcourt with Bryant at the three, Huertas could be one of the backup guards off the bench for Los Angeles.
