Report: Butler cancels meetings with other teams after Bulls offer max

Published Jun. 30, 2015 4:53 p.m. ET

Chicago Bulls fans should not be worried about Jimmy Butler's free agency.

The breakout 2014-15 All-Star has been offered a maximum contract by the Bulls. Chris Broussard of ESPN reports that a five-year deal worth in excess of $90 million is already on the table. Broussard also says that Butler has called off all meetings with other teams.

This makes sense because Butler can now only field offer sheets from other teams that are at least three years long, and Chicago will match any of those. Since he's a restricted free agent, it looks as though the Bulls will retain him for the 2015-16 season no matter what.

The only way Butler can go into unrestricted free agency next summer would be by signing the minimum qualifying offer, which is for one season and would make him much, much less money. If he takes that course, it would be a bold and surprising one.
