NBA 2K17 Derrick Rose, Carmelo Anthony Maybe Too Real

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The 2K Sports NBA franchise has long been hailed as a particularly advanced and realistic basketball video game franchise, but did they just get too real with the NBA 2K17 Derrick Rose and Carmelo Anthony characters?

Rose, long a fixture of the Chicago Bulls, has moved on to the New York Knicks. It might be a fresh start for Rose with the Knicks, but the problems that surrounded Derrick follow him to New York. This is true both in real life and in video games.

Rose has experienced a number of unfortunate injuries during his NBA career. His high level of skill and determination led Chicago as close to the status of contender as they have been since the 1990s. Cruel as it was, Rose and the Bulls had their hopes and ambitions torpedoed repeatedly as a series of injuries kept Rose off the court for what amounted to years.

Now, we have this (be aware that the video contains strong language):

Rose seems to have found no end to his suffering, even in the virtual world. It appears that the NBA 2K17 edition of the game has been all too real. We don’t know the exact injury Rose picked up here, but it does look fairly serious. If he did suffer an ACL tear while walking down the court, it could be a career-threatening injury.

The reaction of Anthony is worth noting. It could be payback for the anti-recruiting stance that Rose has held in the past. There is a real possibility that the game was way too real on the Melo end, too. Anthony looks just as disinterested on the New York bench during the unfortunate demise of their new point guard as he does during every game he has played for the Knicks in the last three years.

It will be interesting to see if the game is this real for everyone else who plays it when it is released. For now, let’s all hope that Rose has continued health in real life while he seeks to reboot his career in a new city and contract year.
