Kobe passes torch, drops out of Rio Olympics consideration

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 8:08 p.m. ET

MIAMI (AP) Kobe Bryant has decided to drop out of consideration for a spot on this summer's U.S. Olympic basketball team.

Saying it was time to pass the torch to others, Bryant revealed his decision Saturday. The five-time NBA champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist had previously said he wanted to experience the games one last time, and likely would have gotten strong consideration for a spot on the U.S. team that will head to Rio de Janeiro this summer.

Bryant made the announcement in Salt Lake City before the Los Angeles Lakers' game there against the Utah Jazz, and has informed USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo and Olympic coach Mike Krzyzewski of his decision.

Bryant says, ''I've had my moment.''
