The Knicks are still looking for a permanent fit at head coach and one of the franchise's best players would like to throw his hat into the ring.

Patrick Ewing, the team's iconic center for 15 seasons, told the New York Daily News that the Knicks position would be "a great fit for me."

"I have my number up there (in the Garden rafters)," Ewing said "I still live in the area. If I get an opportunity for an interview I'd be happy."

Ewing has served as an assistant coach for four teams in the past 13 seasons. He's currently the lead assistant coach for the Charlotte Hornets.

"I've been doing this, what, 13 years now?" Ewing said. "I see people who don't have the same amount on their resume as I do and still have gotten opportunities. It is what it is. All I can do is continue to work, continue to get better at my craft, and hopefully one day somebody will give me an opportunity and I'll show that I'm ready."

Ewing has interviewed twice for head coaching opportunities, turning down the chance to coach the Knicks' D-League team in 2012. He authored the bulk of his Hall of Fame career with the Knicks, leading the franchise in points, rebounds, steals and blocks.

Kurt Rambis is currently the Knicks interim head coach since Derek Fisher was fired in February.
