Kelly Olynyk discusses his pivotal offseason workout plan
Kelly Olynyk's second NBA season was a bit of a disappointment. He averaged 10.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, with an assist rate that didn't improve from his rookie year.
The seven-footer nearly fell out of Brad Stevens' rotation in the playoffs, and constantly made defensive miscues throughout the season. Here's what Olynyk had to say about his offseason thought process and workout plan, as he prepares for a hugely important third year in Boston, per The Boston Globe:
“For me, the offseason is a well-rounded thing, but I just want to get a lot of threes up, and work a little inside-out game. The offseason is really a time where you’ve got to get healthy. That’s something that’s really a major focus.”
Olynyk won't play for Boston's Summer League team, and doesn't know if he'll suit up for Team Canada, either:
“We’re working with [the Celtics] and the national team to come together and make sure we’re not burning each other out. Hopefully I’ll have a chance to play in the qualifying tournament in Mexico [in August]. I can’t [say] for sure or not sure, but I want to play for my country. That’s something that you do. It’s something special to be able to wear your country’s name across your chest.”
Next season is big for Olynyk. He needs to establish himself as a capable starter, someone who can utilize his size on the boards and as a defender in the paint. Improving his three-point percentage wouldn't hurt.
If it's another stagnant year, a trade could soon be in the works.
