If he doesn't get a car, Spurs' Popovich doesn't want coaching award
San Antonio Spurs' Gregg Popovich is peerless among active coaches. No one can touch his three Coach of the Year awards, to say nothing of his five NBA titles.
And on a smaller timeline, Popovich is dominant as well: This week, Pop was named Coach of the Month for his work in December — an award he's now won a record 16 times.
These awards have gotten so old hat for Popovich that they've appeared to have lost their value (if they ever had value in Pop's eyes to begin with). Unless, of course, the accolade is attached to a shiny new car:
Pretty funny response from Popovich, right? Only, we're not entirely sure he's kidding. The Spurs coach seems to really be into his vehicles. Tim Duncan has previously joked that his garage is only allowed to change the tires on Pop's cars. Any other work is off-limits.
And this isn't the fire time Pop has linked cars with basketball play. He reportedly told his team in 2010 that the first player to miss a free throw in a playoff series against the Dallas Mavericks would owe Popovich a new car.
Duncan's response: "What color do you want?"
It's the same question we'd have for Popovich after his next Coach of the Month award.
