6 famous sports explosions that put Kanye West's Twitter rant to shame
If you were around a computer, smartphone or any other Internet device early Wednesday afternoon, you probably saw the NSFW and since deleted Twitter rant from rapper and self-proclaimed genius Kanye West aimed at fellow entertainer Wiz Khalifa. West's comments were equal parts funny, rude, complimentary and downright misogynistic.
That's the kind of thing that can happen when someone goes off in an emotional state, though. In the sports world, we're pretty familiar with such diatribes — whether it's a coach lambasting his team or a player questioning what we're even doing here. In fact, here are six all-time sports rants that put West's Twitter outburst to shame -- because there's just something more fun about seeing it than reading it on Twitter.
6. Mike Gundy is a grown man ... who knows how to yell
This is a tough inclusion because, by all accounts, Gundy realized that he'd made a mistake with his approach to defending a player. And there's no question that his instinct to stick up for one of his own was the right one. Even in 2008, though, the Internet culture of ridicule and mockery had taken root, and Gundy's emotional outburst became fodder for so many jokes and lists like these. In an ideal world, maybe Gundy's rant would remind us all that people can change and that we aren't defined by our most visible moments — a lesson Kanye West has had ample opportunity to learn. Unfortunately, this is not that world.
5. Practice? Really?
Allen Iverson's epic spiel against the necessity of practice has been played so many times throughout the years that most of us can recite it by heart. Iverson wanted to remind people what's truly important. Like West, he might not have been the tallest, but he was an absolute master at his chosen profession.
4. 'You cannot be serious!'
When you're a genius on the level of West or, say, John McEnroe, it's hard to admit that you might be wrong. And that conviction in one's beliefs often is at the core of inflamed reactions like the one McEnroe unleashed upon a poor sideline judge who had the audacity to make a call against the tennis legend. If McEnroe had access to Kanye's putdowns, we could easily see him telling the official that McEnroe is the OG and should be respected as such.
3. Dennis Green teaches us all about existential philosophy
"It is what it is" seems like the kind of wisdom by which West would live. In the same vein, Green let the world know that the Chicago Bears were who his Arizona Cardinals thought they were. And that's good. It's important to know the target of your efforts. Otherwise, you might end up tilting at windmills and ranting about things that don't make sense. Not that Kanye would ever do that or anything, of course.
2. Richard Sherman knows how awesome Richard Sherman is
To everyone out there who lacks in confidence, take some lessons from Sherman and West. You are your own captain, and you can do all of the amazing things that you want to do ... even if it helps to have millions of dollars first. Some might call this scene from Sherman awkward. We think it's spectacular. Never let anyone tell you you're less than the best.
1. The greatest rant you may never have seen
When lists like this get put together, there's often a focus on the relatively recent past. But no rant compilation would be complete without Kansas City Royals manager Hal McRae's volcanic explosion back in 1993. He reacted the same way we'd imagine West would if someone questioned his process. Creating music that touches a generation and putting together the right batting order are roughly equivalent, right?
