Sources: Yankees sign Boesch to deal

After losing Nick Swisher as a free agent and Mark Teixeira and Curtis Granderson to preseason injuries, the New York Yankees have started adding again.

The Yankees have reached agreement with outfielder Brennan Boesch on a one-year contract, two sources confirmed to FOXSports.com. The team later confirmed the deal Friday night, which is worth $1.5 million according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, who first reported the news.

Boesch, 27, became a free agent earlier this week after he was released by the Detroit Tigers, his only previous organization. The Tigers had been trying to trade Boesch after a disappointing season in which he posted a .659 OPS, but they were unable to find a team willing to assume his entire salary. Boesch batted .188 in seven spring games with Detroit this year.

Boesch, a left-handed hitter with power, will have a chance to earn regular playing time in a Yankees outfield that, minus Granderson, includes singles hitters Brett Gardner and Ichiro Suzuki. Boesch nearly made the All-Star team in 2010 and finished fifth in American League Rookie of the Year voting that year. His home-run rate should pick up now that he’s moving from Comerica Park to Yankee Stadium.
