The Oakland Athletics, continuing their search for an adequate third baseman, signed free agent Brandon Inge on Sunday, according to a major-league source.

Inge, who was released by the Detroit Tigers last week, cleared waivers at 2 p.m. ET.

Inge played 12 seasons for the Tigers, breaking in initially as a catcher.

A career .234 hitter, Inge was selected to the All-Star Game in 2009 as a third baseman.

The Tigers' offseason signing of Prince Fielder left Inge without a position, as Miguel Cabrera moved from first base to third.

Detroit tried Inge out at second base, but he wasn't hitting for the Tigers.

Upon his release from the Tigers, Inge was batting just .100 with a home run and two RBI this year.
