Report: Jason Varitek turned down Mariners managerial offer

Published Oct. 21, 2015 12:16 a.m. ET

According to a report, Boston Red Sox special assistant Jason Varitek was offered the managerial position with the Seattle Mariners -- but he is turning it down.

Varitek, who played with the Red Sox for the entirety of his 15-year career, is currently a special assistant to the general manager and will stay in that role.

Previous reports stated that the Sox approved of the interview with new Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto, who is trying to replace former manager Lloyd McClendon.

Though Varitek doesn't have any managerial experience, many experts see the former catcher as a great fit for the position, citing his leadership skills and knowledge of the game.

Varitek was originally drafted by the Seattle organization as a first-rounder in 1994, but was flipped to the Red Sox in a trade.
