Manny Ramirez slugging his way back

Published Jul. 13, 2013 1:00 a.m. ET

Manny Ramirez keeps inching his way toward a major-league return.

Ramirez jacked a go-ahead, solo homer for Triple-A Round Rock on Friday, and he now has two home runs over his first six games with the Rangers’ minor-league affiliate.

The Rangers signed Ramirez, who tore it up in Taiwan earlier this year, to a minor-league contract without any real expectations. The thought process was that if he works his way back to the majors and contributes, it’s an added bonus for Texas. If he doesn’t, then no harm, no foul.

Rangers DH Lance Berkman is currently on the disabled list with a hip injury. If Ramirez keeps smacking long balls and feasting on Triple-A pitching, perhaps we’ll get to see Manny on a big-league diamond once more.
