Forget Arizona: Jocketty expected to remain as Cincinnati GM

Forget about the possibility of a Tony La Russa-Walt Jocketty reunion in Arizona.

Jocketty, completing the final year of his contract with the Reds, is expected to remain the team's general manager, according to major-league sources.

La Russa, the Diamondbacks' new chief baseball officer, could replace GM Kevin Towers and/or manager Kirk Gibson at the end of the season.

Jocketty, who was the Cardinals' GM while La Russa was manager from 1996 to 2007, appeared to be a possible candidate; he even owns a home in Arizona.

However, there never has been indication that Jocketty wants to leave Cincinnati, or that owner Bob Castellini wants him out.

The Reds, meanwhile, have unfinished business after an injury-marred season that has left them with a 61-68 record, 10½ games back in the NL Central.

Jocketty, 63, will need to navigate the team through a challenging juncture; all of the Reds' starting pitchers but Homer Bailey are eligible for free agency after the 2015 season, and at least one is expected to be traded this winter.

By staying with the Reds, Jocketty would agree to perform the necessary restructuring and take another shot once first baseman Joey Votto and second baseman Brandon Phillips are healthy next season.
