Fan victim of brutal beating outside Angel Stadium after Game 2 of ALDS

A fan is in critical condition after being brutally beaten in the parking lot outside Angel Stadium following Game 2 of the American League Division Series on Friday night, according to media reports.

The 43-year-old man from Huntington Beach, Calif., whose name has not been released, hasn't been able to speak to police. His male cousin, who accompanied him and was reportedly uninjured, hasn't provided much detail, though police said three men were involved in the attack.

"Right now, we are left wondering why these individuals attacked this victim," Anaheim Police Lt. Robert Dunn said, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

"There is no evidence to suggest that there was an argument or any type of physical altercation prior to the incident in the parking lot," Dunn told the Orange County Register, adding that nothing to date indicated the attack "was a fan-rivalry type of incident." 

Both the victim and the suspected attackers were wearing Angels gear, KABC-TV reported.

The attack was "seemingly for no reason," Dunn said. "We don't have any information that it was something that began inside and spilled outside."

Two witnesses who spoke to KABC, identified only as Sandra and her 15-year-old daughter Morgan, described the beating.

"This man started running towards another, and just started beating this guy. He had two punches, the guy went down, he was out cold, and then he started beating his face really bad on the pavement," Sandra said.

Morgan added: "He continued to punch him while he was on the ground. ... He had ran a few steps away and came back, I started to get even more worried. Is he going to come after me and my mom, or go to anyone around, a witness?"

Dunn said the number of officers at the stadium, where the Angels played the Kansas City Royals, was "above and beyond what we would deploy at a regular-season game."
