The Chicago Cubs have appointed Mark Riggins as their pitching coach.

The 53-year-old Riggins spent the past three seasons as Chicago's minor league pitching coordinator after 29 years with St. Louis as a minor league pitcher, manager and coach. He also served as the Cardinals' pitching coach in 1995 under managers Joe Torre and Mike Jorgensen, and was their minor league pitching coordinator from 1996-2007.

The Cubs had been looking for a pitching coach since Larry Rothschild left after nine seasons to take a similar job with the Yankees.

The Cubs were 13th in the NL with a 4.18 ERA after ranking among the top five the previous three seasons. The bullpen had the second-highest ERA in the league at 4.55, while the starters were ninth at 4.00.
