Blue Jays to start RHP McGowan vs Yankees

Published Sep. 16, 2011 5:00 p.m. ET

The Toronto Blue Jays made a late pitching change Friday before their series opener against the New York Yankees.

Right-hander Dustin McGowan will start instead of lefty Brett Cecil, who has been listed as day to day after sustaining a cut on his left index finger while cleaning a blender.

McGowan will pitch against Yankees' ace CC Sabathia (19-8).

It will be McGowan's third appearance this season and second start. He's 0-0 with a 9.00 ERA in his return to Toronto after not pitching in the majors since July 2008 because of two shoulder surgeries.

Cecil (4-9) has a 4.37 ERA in 18 starts with Toronto.
