UNC Asheville hands Campbell 10th straight loss 81-71

BUIES CREEK, N.C. (AP) Sam Hughes and Dylan Smith scored 17 points apiece and UNC Asheville beat Campbell 81-71 on Saturday to remain atop the Big South Conference.

UNC Asheville was up by just two, 34-32, at halftime but opened the second half on an 11-4 spurt for a 45-36 lead. The Bulldogs built a 13-point advantage with 5:26 left after Kevin Vannatta's 3-pointer.

Chris Clemons and D.J. Mason combined to score the next eight Campbell points as the Camels pulled to 69-62 with 3:49 left.

Troy Harper made two free throws with 1:11 left to cut Campbell deficit to 75-71. But UNC Asheville pushed its lead back to six points after Dwayne Sutton's putback and the Bulldogs made 4 of 6 free throws in the final minute.

Vannatta finished with 16 points for UNC Asheville (17-8, 10-3).

Clemons scored 18 points for Campbell (8-15, 2-11), which lost its 10th straight game. Harper and Mason had 17 points apiece.
