Hunt's key FTs, NC A&T tops Savannah St. 63-62 for new coach
GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) Sam Hunt made two free throws with two seconds on the clock, lifting North Carolina A&T to a 63-62 come-from-behind win against Savannah State on Saturday and giving interim coach Jay Joyner a win in his first Division I game.
Joyner was named to replace Cy Alexander, who abruptly resigned on Friday.
Hunt made just a single basket, but went 3-for-4 at the foul line, helping the Aggies (6-17, 3-6 MEAC) break a nine-game losing streak.
Troyce Manassa had given Savannah State a 62-61 lead with nine seconds remaining as the Tigers erased a six-point gap. Kamil Williams launched a shot from 75 feet that rattled in and out at the buzzer.
Williams finished with 20 points for Savannah State (7-12, 3-5).
Alexander led the Aggies to their first NCAA Tournament appearance and first NCAA win in 2013. He plans to remain at NC A&T in broadcasting and said the last three years have been tumultuous with the deaths of his wife and mother.
