E. Kentucky tops Jacksonville St. 76-54, keeps OVC hopes up

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (AP) JaVontae Hawkins scored 14 points and Nick Mayo added 13 as Eastern Kentucky cruised to a 76-54 win over Jacksonville State on Thursday night, holding the Gamecocks to 27-percent shooting.

Eastern Kentucky (15-15, 6-9 Ohio Valley) is seeking the eighth and final seed into the OVC tournament and must win its final game, against Tennessee Tech, on Saturday.

Jacksonville State fought into a 25-25 tie with two minutes to go before halftime, only to see Jaylen Babb-Harrison score, then grab a defensive rebound and feed Mayo for a dunk as the Colonels closed the half on a quick 7-0 burst. Ja'Mill Powell and Isaac McGlone added 3-pointers after halftime to extend the lead.

Eastern Kentucky shot 51 percent from the floor (29-57), and made 8 of 16 3-pointers. The Colonels outrebounded Jacksonville State 48-27.

Greg Tucker scored 15 points to lead Jacksonville State (8-22, 4-11).
