Nigeria broke onto the World Cup scene in 1994, winning its group with a 2-0-1 record while edging out Bulgaria and Argentina in goal differential. In the Round of 16, Nigeria lost 2-1 to eventual runner-up Italy.
The early success continued for Nigeria, as the country again won its group with a 2-0-1 record. In the knockout stage, Denmark defeated Nigeria before falling to Brazil a round later.
The 2002 FIFA World Cup was not kind to Nigeria. After losses to Argentina and Sweden, the team salvaged its trip to Japan with a 0-0 draw against England.
After failing to qualify for the 2006 World Cup, Nigeria returned in 2010. However, the outcome was a letdown. Nigeria finished 0-1-2 with losses to Argentina and Greece, and a draw against South Korea.
For the third time in five World Cup appearances, Nigeria advanced to the Round of 16, finishing 1-1-1 in pool play. The first round of the knockout stage continued to be the end of the line though, as Nigeria fell to France by a score of 2-0.
Nigeria was the first African team to book a ticket to Russia. The country dominated qualifiers and put its lead out of reach with a 1-0 victory over Zambia.
