After failing to qualify for several tournaments, Denmark finally broke onto the World Cup scene in 1986. The country’s 3-0-0 record in the Group Stage was highlighted by a 2-0 victory over 1982 runner-up West Germany. It all fell apart in the Round of 16, though, as Denmark lost 5-1 to Spain.

Grouped with the host nation and eventual champion, France, Denmark managed a 1-1-1 record that was good enough to advance to the Knockout Stage. There, Denmark defeated Nigeria before falling to eventual runner-up Brazil in the Quarter-finals. It remains the farthest Denmark has advanced.
Making consecutive World Cup appearances for the first time, Denmark continued to find success in group play. A 2-1-0 record won its group, but Denmark lost 3-0 to England in the Round of 16.
For the first time, Denmark’s World Cup experience did not include a trip to the Knockout Stage. The country defeated Cameroon but lost 2-0 to the Netherlands and 3-1 to Japan.
Denmark was one of the last countries to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. After finishing as a group runner-up in the first round of the UEFA World Cup qualification, Denmark needed a top four placement in the second round and came in third.
