2024 Copa América Players To Follow
Christian Pulisic
The face of the USMNT since he was a teenager and now just entering his prime, Pulisic has been at the height of his powers at the club level throughout his first season in Italy following a roller coaster four year run with English club Chelsea that included a Champions League winner’s medal but not enough playing time, either because of injury or coaches’ decisions.
Vinicius Junior
For the last decade, Neymar has been the face of the Seleção, and while that still might be the case, Vinicius Junior will be Brazil’s leading man at the Copa America due to Neymar’s injured status. Time will tell if he’s capable of filling Neymar’s massive shoes.
Lionel Messi
For many, Lionel Messi’s status as the greatest player of all time was cemented when he led Argentina past France in the 2022 World Cup final, but the 36-year-old is still hungry for titles at the international level and defending Argentina’s Copa America crown would be another impressive bullet point on his resume.
Santiago Gimenez
In the year and change since he was cut from Mexico’s 2022 World Cup team, the Argentina-born youngster has developed into one of El Tri’s top performers. Gimenez shook off the disappointment of his omission by helping Feyenoord win the Dutch title for just the second time this century, scoring 15 times along the way.
Darwin Nunez
With Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez entering the twilight of their careers, Darwin Nunez will be tasked with leading Uruguay’s attack at the Copa America. That shouldn’t be a problem for the 24-year-old, who scored 15 goals in all competitions for Liverpool last season.
Moises Caicedo
Growing up in a home with 10 older brothers and sisters, it’s no wonder that the defensive midfielder learned early how to fight for the ball. These days Caicedo is one of the leading players in the world at his position, which is why the London titan Chelsea dropped almost $130 million last August to lure him away from Premier League rival Brighton & Hove Albion.
