Impact Askarov has been outstanding in limited action this season, going 3-2-2 with a 2.30 GAA and a .923 save percentage for the lowly Sharks. Askarov has spent most of the season at the AHL level, where he was 9-4-1 with a 2.00 GAA and a .938 save percentage in 14 appearances. The Wild are averaging 3.00 goals per game this season.

Another victory against strong team Askarov made 29 saves in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Devils.

Impact Nico Hischier beat him with a tap-in on a second-period power play, and Paul Cotter went far side in the third. Askarov has won two in a row this week over strong teams (Lightning and Devils) and will remain with the teal while Vitek Vanecek recovers from a fractured cheekbone, suffered Dec. 17. Expect Askarov and Alexandar Georgiev to split starts going forward, although the Sharks may go with the hot hand if he continues to perform as he has in early 2024.

Impact Askarov is 1-2-2 with the Sharks this season, surrendering 13 goals on 153 shots (.915 save percentage) as he is making his case to take over the top job in San Jose. The 22-year-old was selected 11th overall in 2020 by Nashville and was dealt to San Jose in the offseason. Askarov has a tough matchup as the Lightning are averaging a league-high 3.94 goals per game this season.

Impact Outside of the result, it was an encouraging performance for Askarov. Still, he's 1-2-2 with a 2.62 GAA and a .915 save percentage through five NHL outings this season. Vitek Vanecek is week-to-week with a fractured cheekbone, so Askarov will have an extended opportunity to challenge Alexandar Georgiev for playing time between the pipes. Impact Askarov took his first regulation loss in four games this season. Impact It was a high water mark in Askarov's career in terms of saves in the NHL.
