Sonny Milano - Puts up assist
Milano registered an assist in Monday's 3-2 shootout win over the Flames.
Impact
Milano set up Matthew Phillips' first NHL tally in the second period. Milano has played in a third-line role to begin 2023-24, posting one shot on goal and an even plus-minus rating to go with his helper. The 27-year-old winger is not known for physical play -- his career high for hits is 39, set last year when he had 33 points in 64 outings with the Capitals.

John Carlson - Garners assist in win
Carlson recorded an assist, four blocked shots and two shots on goal in Monday's 3-2 shootout win over the Flames.
Impact
Carlson helped out on Connor McMichael's tying goal at 9:54 of the second period. Through two contests, Carlson has five shots on net, five blocked shots, two hits and a minus-1 rating. The 33-year-old blueliner remains the Capitals' top defenseman and should continue to work on the first power-play unit, giving him plenty of opportunities to contribute on offense.

Connor McMichael - Nets tying goal
McMichael scored a goal in Monday's 3-2 shootout win over the Flames.
Impact
McMichael tied the game at 2-2 just before the halfway mark of the second period. He's held down a middle-six role in both games this season, though he was limited to just one blocked shot in the season opener versus Pittsburgh. McMichael was selected in the first round in 2019, and he's looking to hold down an everyday job with the Capitals after appearing in just six contests a year ago.

Matthew Phillips - Haunts former team
Phillips scored a goal on two shots, added an assist and went plus-2 in Monday's 3-2 shootout win over the Flames.
Impact
Phillips' first game against his former team couldn't have gone much better, as he earned his first two NHL points in the contest. He got the Capitals on the board with a tally at 6:50 of the second period, then set up Connor McMichael just over three minutes later for the tying goal. Phillips appeared in just three NHL games with the Flames after being selected in the sixth round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. The Capitals have given him a third-line role to begin this season, though fantasy managers may want to see if he can find consistency before considering him as a depth forward.

Darcy Kuemper - Wins in shootout
Kuemper stopped 38 of 40 shots in Monday's 3-2 shootout win over the Flames.
Impact
Kuemper had to be sharp after the Capitals got off to a slow start. He allowed two goals in the first period but shut things down after that, allowing the Capitals to make a comeback. This was Kuemper's first start of 2023-24 after he missed Opening Night to be with his family after the birth of his first child. The 33-year-old is expected to see the bulk of the playing time between the pipes for Washington this season, especially if Charlie Lindgren (undisclosed) misses any additional time. The Capitals' next two games are on the road, with stops in Ottawa on Wednesday and Montreal on Saturday.

Edmundson (hand) was moved to long-term injured reserve Monday, per Tom Gulitti of NHL.com.

Charlie Lindgren - Status unclear for Monday
Lindgren (undisclosed) left the morning skate early and it's unclear if he will be available to suit up in Monday's game against Calgary, Sammi Silber of The Hockey News reports.
Impact
Darcy Kuemper is expected to start Monday against the Flames after missing Washington's season opener Friday versus Pittsburgh due to the birth of his first child. However, it's unclear if Lindgren will be available to serve as the backup netminder. If Lindgren can't play, Clay Stevenson might be brought back up as an emergency option.

Darcy Kuemper - Slated to start Monday
Kuemper is expected to be between the pipes at home versus Calgary on Monday, Tarik El-Bashir of Monumental Sports Network reports.
Impact
Kuemper looks poised to make his season debut after missing Opening Night due to the birth of his child. The netminder underwhelmed last season, earning just 22 wins in 57 contests while posting a 2.87 GAA and .908 save percentage. There will be some questions regarding the backup after Charlie Lindgren (undisclosed) was deemed a game-time call.

Kuemper (personal) was on the ice for Sunday's practice, Jared Serre of Washington Hockey Now reports.
Impact
Kuemper was on paternity leave following the birth of his first child and was absent for Washington's 4-0 loss to the Penguins on Friday. With Clay Stevenson having been returned to the minors, the 33-year-old seems likely to make his season debut against the Flames but further clarification is expected prior to puck drop.
