Alex Ovechkin - Gets first goal of season
Ovechkin scored a power-play goal Tuesday in a 4-1 loss to Toronto. He fired 14 shots.
Impact
It was the most non-Ovechkin goal that Ovie could score. He wired a shot from his office that was stopped, and as the play developed, he parked on the right post. Ovechkin then tapped in a hard pass from John Carlson behind a sprawling Joseph Woll with only 11 seconds left in the second. Much has been discussed about the 38-year-old's apparent decline, especially in shots, but his 14 shots suddenly change that story, at least on the surface. Still, new NHL Edge data suggest there may be genuine slippage in his game. Ovechkin's maximum shot speed has dropped from 101.52 mph in 2021-22 to 91.06 this season. And his max skating speed has declined from 22.16 mph to 19.91 in the same span. The sample size this season is small, but even the drop from 2021-22 to 2022-23 seems significant.

Nic Dowd - Still sidelined
According to coach Spencer Carbery, Dowd (upper body) remains "day-to-day to an extent" ahead of Tuesday's game versus Toronto, Tarik El-Bashir of Monumental Sports Network reports...
Impact
It sounds like Dowd is likely a little worse off than day-to-day at this point, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him miss a few more games with his upper-body issue. The 33-year-old vet has gone scoreless through two contests this campaign.

Hunter Shepard - Starting Wednesday
Shepard will defend the road net Wednesday against New Jersey, per Tarik El-Bashir of Monumental Sports Network.
Impact
Shepard will make his NHL debut in the second half of Washington's back-to-back after Darcy Kuemper plays in Tuesday's matchup with Toronto. The 27-year-old Shepard has a 30-11-5 record with a 2.11 GAA and a .920 save percentage in 47 AHL appearances over the past four seasons, including two contests during the 2023-24 campaign.

Darcy Kuemper - Guarding goal Tuesday
Kuemper will patrol the home crease Tuesday versus Toronto, Tarik El-Bashir of Monumental Sports Network reports.
Impact
Kuemper is coming off a 25-save effort in Saturday's 3-2 overtime loss to Montreal. He has given up nine goals in his past two outings (0-1-1) after starting the season with a brilliant 38-save performance in a 3-2 win over Calgary.

Hunter Shepard - Summoned to DC
Shepard was called up from AHL Hershey on Tuesday, Tarik El-Bashir of Monumental Sports Network reports.
Impact
With Charlie Lindgren (upper body) still ailing and the Capitals facing a back-to-back slate beginning Tuesday against the Maple Leafs, Shepard appears poised to get some regular season NHL action following the recall. The 27-year-old -- who sports a 2.88 GAA and an .885 save percentage behind a 2-0-0 record in the minors this season -- was an invaluable component of Herhsey's Calder Cup run last year and could very well make his NHL debut during the recall.

Clay Stevenson - Returned to minors
Stevenson was sent down to AHL Hershey on Tuesday, Tarik El-Bashir of Monumental Sports Network reports.
Impact
Stevenson had been recalled to fill the void left by Charle Lindgren (upper body), but the Capitals seem intent to give Hunter Shepard a look as Darcy Kuemper's understudy. The 24-year-old will await his next chance to make his NHL debut.

Charlie Lindgren - Returns to ice
Lindgren (upper body) was on the ice prior to Monday's practice, Tarik El-Bashir of Monumental Network reports.
Impact
Lindgren was spotted doing individual skills work prior to the official start of Monday's practice. The 29-year-old's remains without a clear timeline to return to game action, so expect a heavy dose of Darcy Kuemper -- with Clay Stevenson backing up -- in the short term.

Darcy Kuemper - Great game for naught
Kuemper made 25 saves in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Canadiens on Saturday.
Impact
Kuemper had a great game, but was hung out to dry a lot by his teammates. The Caps have struggled to score this season, notching six goals in four games. Kuemper is 1-2 with 11 goals allowed on 97 shots. This could be a long season for the netminder and his managers.

Dylan Strome - First two goals of season
Strome scored twice Saturday in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Canadiens.
Impact
He took a feed from Alex Ovechkin and scored at 11:25 of the third to make the game 2-1. Then Strome notched the tying goal with 2:01 left on a pass through the crease by Evgeny Kuznetsov. Strome is off to a slow start to the season -- the goals were his first points of the season (four games). He should pick up the pace soon enough.

Darcy Kuemper - Starting in Montreal
Kuemper will protect the road goal Saturday versus the Canadiens, Marc Antoine Godin of Radio Canada reports.
Impact
Kuemper will make his third straight start. He's allowed eight goals on 69 shots over his first two appearances of the season. The Canadiens have scored 10 times over three contests, but their forward depth is being tested with Kirby Dach (knee) out for the year.

Impact
Dowd will miss a second straight game despite being on the ice for the morning skate ahead of both contests. During his absence, Anthony Mantha and Alexei Protas have been logging time on the fourth line.
