Darcy Kuemper - Gives up five in loss Kuemper allowed five goals on 31 shots in Wednesday's 5-1 loss to the Rangers.
Impact The Capitals opened the scoring early in the second period, but it was all Rangers after that. Kuemper dropped to 8-7-2 with the regulation loss and saw a personal three-game winning streak come to an end. He's splitting time in Washington's net with Charlie Lindgren, but both goalies have little margin for error with Washington averaging the second-fewest goals per game in the league.

Max Pacioretty - Won't play Wednesday Pacioretty (Achilles) won't make his season debut Wednesday versus the Rangers, per Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post.
Impact Pacioretty is close to playing though, so perhaps he'll draw into the lineup Friday against the Islanders. The 35-year-old might be eased into the lineup when he does return, but he's likely to eventually serve in a top-six role with Washington. Pacioretty provided 46 goals and 91 points in 92 appearances over his previous three campaigns.

Darcy Kuemper - Set to start Wednesday Kuemper is expected to guard the road net against the Rangers on Wednesday, Tarik El-Bashir of Monumental Sports Network reports.
Impact Kuemper has won his last three starts while saving 90 of 95 shots (.947 save percentage). He's improved to 8-6-2 with a 2.90 GAA and a .900 save percentage in 16 outings this campaign. The Rangers, who are tied for 12th offensively this year with 3.34 goals per game, figure to be a difficult opponent.

Impact Lapierre was reassigned for the start of the Christmas break, and he's back with the Capitals now that it's over. The 21-year-old has two goals and five points in 14 contests with Washington while averaging 9:55 of ice time this year.

Impact The only puck that got past him came from Luke Glendening, who deflected Victor Hedman's point shot in the first period. Lindgren needed to be sharp throughout and stoned Nick Paul with 1:52 left in the third after the forward got behind the defense. He's 2-1-2 in his last five starts with just nine goals allowed. Remarkably, 20 shots against is the lowest tally Lindgren has faced all season. He's more likely to see 35 shots than 20.

Impact Lindgren picked up the starting assignment Thursday in Columbus and was great, stopping 34 shots in a 3-2 overtime win. The victory boosted his record to 7-3-2 with a 2.40 GAA and .927 save percentage as he has outplayed Darcy Kuemper this season. The Lightning are tied for ninth in NHL scoring, averaging 3.41 goals per game.
