Canadiens reclaim forward Samuel Blais on waivers and send him to Laval Habs signed the 29-year-old Quebecer as a free agent on July 1 before losing him to the Toronto Maple Leafs on waivers.

Claimed by Montreal Blais was claimed off waivers by the Canadiens from Toronto on Thursday, per Chris Johnston of The Athletic.

Impact Blais was claimed by Toronto from Montreal before the start of the season and returns to the Habs, who inked him to a one-year contract July 1. Blais had a goal and two assists in eight games with Toronto and while the Canadiens could send him to AHL Laval, he could stick with the injury-riddled big club.

Put on waivers Blais was placed on waivers Wednesday.

Impact Toronto also reassigned Jacob Quillan to AHL Toronto so that Auston Matthews and Nicolas Roy could be activated off injured reserve ahead of Wednesday's game against Columbus. Blais has a goal, three points and 28 hits in eight appearances with the Maple Leafs in 2025-26. He's expected to head to the minors if he goes unclaimed.

Avoids serious injury Blais (upper body) was back at practice Thursday, telling reporters, "We did some scans and I'm all good," David Alter of The Hockey News reports.

Impact According to Blais, at one point, he was spitting out blood, but it seems he avoided any serious injury. With his assist versus the Blues on Tuesday, the 29-year-old winger brought his five-game pointless streak to a close. Once the Leafs start getting back some of their injured forwards, Blais will likely find himself serving as a healthy scratch. In the meantime, he figures to remain in a third-lone role alongside youngster Jacob Quillan.

Impact Blais was only in the lineup because Matthew Knies (lower body) wasn't able to play. Blais was coughing up blood, which forced his exit from the contest. His status for Thursday versus the Blue Jackets is not yet known.

Two points in team debut Blais scored a goal on three shots, added an assist and logged five hits in Wednesday's 6-3 loss to the Blue Jackets.

Impact Blais hadn't played in the Maple Leafs' first 10 games. However, injuries have started to pile up -- William Nylander (lower body) was unavailable in the second half of a back-to-back, Scott Laughton (lower body) and Calle Jarnkrok (lower body) remain out and Steven Lorentz left Wednesday's game with an upper-body injury. This could give Blais a chance in the lineup, and his two-point effort was a good first impression on the Toronto staff in a game where most players didn't do well.

Hits waivers for AHL assignment Blais was placed on waivers by the Canadiens for the purpose of assignment to AHL Laval, the team announced Sunday.

Impact Blais is in his first year as a member of the Canadiens organization, and he will begin the season in the AHL. The 29-year-old spent the entirety of last season with AHL Abbotsford, enjoying a good season with 59 points in 74 games, regular season and playoffs.
