Dougie Hamilton - Not close to return Coach Lindy Ruff said Friday that "Dougie (Hamilton) is a long ways away with what he had." Amanda Stein of the Devils' official site reports.
Impact Hamilton had surgery Dec. 1 for a torn pectoral muscle and likely is out for another 3-4 months. The defenseman had five goals and 16 points in 20 games before his injury, including four goals and eight points on the power play. Hamilton is iffy at best to return before the end of the season, but could be back for some playoff action, depending on how deep a run the Devils are able to make.

Tomas Nosek - Still not skating Nosek has yet to begin skating after undergoing foot surgery in late November, Amanda Stein of the Devils' official site reports.
Impact Coach Lindy Ruff said Friday that "(Nosek's) closer, but he's not in a situation to start skating yet." Nosek has nary a point in six NHL games this season, his first with New Jersey.

Timo Meier - Still unable to practice Meier (middle body) is not at practice Friday, according to Amanda Stein of the Devils' official site.
Impact Coach Lindy Ruff did not provide an update Friday on Meier, but it appears that he will not play Friday. Meier has only nine goals and 15 points in 28 games, far below expectations as he inked an eight-year, $70.4 million contract in the offseason. Meier had 40 goals last season and 35 the previous year, but he is on pace for only 22 goals this season.

Devils play the Blackhawks following McLeod's 2-goal game

The New Jersey Devils host the Chicago Blackhawks after Michael McLeod's two-goal game against the Washington Capitals in the Devils' 6-3 win
JANUARY 5, 2024 • Associated Press
Alexander Holtz - Picks up two assists Wednesday Holtz registered two assists in a 6-3 win over Washington on Wednesday.
Impact Holtz earned his second multi-point game of the season. He has eight goals and 17 points in 36 outings this season. The 21-year-old has offensive upside, but he's serving in a bottom-six capacity, averaging just 11:55 of ice time, which will keep his production somewhat sporadic for now.

Erik Haula - Snags two helpers Haula recorded a pair of assists against the Capitals on Wednesday.
Impact It was Haula's second multi-point game of the season but he remains stuck in an eight-game goal drought during which he registered just 14 shots. Despite the slump, the veteran continues to slot into a second-line role while seeing limited minutes with the No. 2 power-play unit.

Don't look now, but Devils' Alexander Holtz is heating up with improved role. He needs to stay there. Holtz finished with two points in New Jersey's 6-3 win over the Capitals on Wednesday.

Dawson Mercer - Pots two tallies in win Mercer scored two goals in Wednesday's 6-3 win over the Capitals.
Impact It's the third multi-point performance in the last six games for Mercer, who has caught fire on the Devils' second line alongside Nico Hischier. Mercer has five goals and eight points during his surge, but on the season the 22-year-old has just 20 points (12 goals, eight helpers) in 36 contests as he tries to find his place in New Jersey's talented forward ranks.
JANUARY 4, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Michael McLeod - Lights lamp twice Wednesday McLeod scored two goals including the game-winner in Wednesday's 6-3 victory over the Capitals.
Impact The 25-year-old broke open a 3-3 tie with just six seconds left in the second period, keeping possession of the puck despite having two Washington defenders draped all over him and using the momentum from a check to power a backhand that got past Hunter Shepard. Mcleod needed just 36 games to tie his career high with nine goals on the season, and four of those tallies have come in the last eight contests.
JANUARY 4, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Nico Daws - Nabs second straight win Daws stopped 23 shots in Wednesday's 6-3 win over the Capitals.
Impact The 23-year-old netminder let an early lead slip away as Washington tied it up 3-3 late in the second period, but Daws held firm in the third as New Jersey pulled away. He's won both his starts since being called up last week, allowing five goals on 53 shots, and considering that Vitek Vanecek stumbled to a 3.11 GAA and .888 save percentage through eight appearances in December, the door is open for Daws to at least work his way into a timeshare in the Devils crease if he keeps getting results.

Nathan Bastian - Supplies rare helper Bastian recorded an assist in Wednesday's 6-3 win over the Capitals.
Impact The Devils were in control for basically the entire game, with fourth-line winger Bastian even getting in on the action. He's scored one goal to go along with five helpers through 34 contests. New Jersey ranks seventh in the league at 3.46 goals per game, but Bastian simply doesn't play enough to warrant consideration in fantasy leagues.

Ondrej Palat - Will miss time Palat (lower body) was injured in Tuesday's practice and is expected to miss a few more games, Amanda Stein of the Devils' official site reports.
Impact Palat was a surprise scratch for Wednesday's contest versus the Capitals. Based on head coach Lindy Ruff's postgame comments, Palat shouldn't be expected to play in the Devils' upcoming back-to-back versus the Blackhawks and Canucks on Friday and Saturday, respectively. The winger's absence was covered by Colin Miller on Wednesday, but forward Graeme Clarke is also an option to enter the lineup during Palat's absence.

Ondrej Palat - Unavailable Wednesday Palat (lower body) won't play Wednesday versus the Capitals.
Impact Palat saw 15:15 of ice time in Saturday's game versus the Bruins, so it's unclear when he was hurt. The winger has just one goal on 18 shots over his last nine games. Graeme Clarke is expected to be in the lineup Wednesday, though it's unclear if the Devils will make any additional changes.
