As a result, the Panthers' decision to rule Marshall out for the Week 7 matchup comes as little surprise. With Marshall sidelined for the first time this season and Alex Erickson (concussion) listed as questionable but uncertain to play Sunday, rookie Shi Smith could have a regular spot in three-wide sets alongside DJ Moore and Robby Anderson.

Impact It's no surprise Marshall hasn't cleared the necessary steps in the NFL's protocol for head injuries after taking a big hit from Vikings safety Xavier Woods this past Sunday. Marshall has had a slow start to his NFL career despite seeing at least 50 percent of the Panthers' offensive snaps in five of six games, hauling in 14 of 22 targets for 116 yards and no TDs. With Marshall and fellow wide receiver Alex Erickson diagnosed with concussions, the Panthers are left with Shi Smith at the position on the active roster behind starters DJ Moore and Robby Anderson.
