Superteams: What if college football's transfer portal didn't exist?
In mix for No. 3 WR slot Marshall and Rashard Higgins are both in the mix to claim the Panthers' No. 3 wide receiver job, Joseph Person of The Athletic reports.
Impact Meanwhile, DJ Moore and Robby Anderson continue to top the team's wideout depth chart. Marshall -- a 2021 second-rounder -- is coming off a rookie season in which he caught 17 passes (on 30 targets) for 138 yards in 13 games. Presumably past a foot issue that landed him on IR late last season -- he'll have to compete for slotting with Higgins (24/275/1 in 15 games with the Browns) , but if either Moore or Anderson miss time at any point this season, whoever slots in as the team's WR3 could yield a degree of fantasy utility, regardless of who the team's starting QB is at that time.

Injury considered short-term Coach Matt Rhule said Monday that he believes Marshall (foot) is dealing with a short-term injury, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports.
Impact Marshall was placed on injured reserve with a foot injury for the regular-season finale, but he's expected to be ready to participate in OTAs this spring. Once the 21-year-old returns to full health, he'll work on carving out a larger role after he caught just 17 of 30 targets for 138 yards during his rookie season.
JANUARY 10, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Moves to IR Carolina placed Marshall on injured reserve Wednesday with a foot injury, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.
Impact The injury spells a disappointing end to a quiet rookie season for Marshall, who caught only 17 passes for 138 yards and eventually lost the No. 3 receiver job to Brandon Zylstra. In his defense, Marshall is on the young side for a rookie, as he won't turn 22 years old until June. He also had the misfortune of spending his debut in one of the worst passing offenses in the league. Still, the tape Marshall put out is far from promising, especially with the Panthers facing an uncertain future at quarterback entering 2022.
JANUARY 5, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Expected to miss season finale The Panthers are expected to place Marshall on injured reserve Wednesday with an unspecified injury, David Newton of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Once the transaction is completed, Marshall won't be eligible to play in Sunday's season finale in Tampa Bay. Marshall's rookie season is thus on the cusp of coming to an end, with the second-round selection having struggled to justify the hype he generated coming out of training camp and the preseason. Through 13 appearances, Marshall secured only 17 of 30 targets for 138 yards. He has yet to score his first NFL touchdown.
JANUARY 5, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Makes two grabs Marshall caught both of his targets for 16 yards in Sunday's 18-10 loss to the Saints.
Impact Marshall turned in his first multi-reception game since Week 5, playing over 70 percent of Carolina's offensive snaps despite teammate Brandon Zylstra returning from the reserve/COVID-19 list. Although his production still wasn't anything special, the fact Marshall played 44 snaps compared to Zylstra's three could suggest he's in line to finish the campaign as the Panthers' third wideout, potentially aiding his admittedly low fantasy relevancy ahead of Week 18's matchup versus the Buccaneers.
JANUARY 3, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Breaks catch slump Marshall caught his only target for six yards in Sunday's 32-6 loss to the Buccaneers.
Impact Marshall made his first reception since Week 6 as teammate Brandon Zylstra was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list ahead of Sunday's kickoff. While finally breaking his catch slump is a welcomed development for Marshall, he still was only targeted once on 41 offensive snaps. Such underwhelming involvement further emphasizes Marshall's restricted upside, and although giving the rookie second-rounder more chances to close the season could be a priority of the Panthers, Zylstra's potential return in Week 17 versus the Saints could impact Marshall's usage.
DECEMBER 28, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Another goose egg Marshall didn't catch his only target in Sunday's 31-14 loss to the Bills.
Impact Marshall played just eight offensive snaps while Brandon Zylstra featured for 54 plays, clearly evidencing the current pecking order of Carolina's third and fourth wideouts. Having dropped down the depth chart in an underwhelming offense, the rookie Marshall's fantasy value is severely restricted heading into the final three weeks of the campaign.
DECEMBER 20, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Not targeted Sunday Marshall was not targeted in Sunday's 29-21 loss to the Falcons.
Impact Marshall returned to the lineup after being a healthy scratch in Carolina's last game. Although he played almost half of the team's offensive snaps, Marshall didn't get any looks his way in the passing game and veteran Brandon Zylstra again outperformed him, finishing with four catches for 45 yards while playing a few more snaps. Without a catch since Week 6, Marshall has run into a substantial rookie wall that has seen Zylstra surpass him in the pecking order.
DECEMBER 13, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Returns Sunday Marshall will play Sunday against the Falcons, David Newton of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Marshall was a healthy scratch in Week 12 against the Dolphins. The rookie second-round selection has struggled this season, not recording a catch since Week 6 against the Vikings. He'll try to get going Sunday against the Falcons.

Panthers Week 12 inactives: WR Terrace Marshall Jr. a healthy scratch Panthers rookie WR Terrace Marshall Jr. is a healthy scratch for Week 12’s matchup with the Dolphins.
NOVEMBER 28, 2021 • USATODAY.COM
Healthy scratch Sunday Marshall (coach's decision) is listed as inactive Sunday at Miami, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports.
Impact Marshall previously sat out Weeks 7 and 8 due to a concussion, but this time around his absence can be attributed to a healthy scratch. The rookie second-rounder actually has recorded a catch since Week 6, failing to gather in any of his four targets in three appearances in the meantime. Behind top wide receivers DJ Moore and Robby Anderson, the Panthers will have Brandon Zylstra, Alex Erickson, Shi Smith and Matt Cole available at wide receiver for Sunday's game.
NOVEMBER 28, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
No catches Sunday Marshall didn't haul in his only target in Sunday's 27-21 loss to Washington.
Impact Marshall, despite making three appearances, hasn't caught a single pass since suffering a concussion in Week 6. On Sunday, backup Brandon Zylstra played 10 more offensive snaps than him. The rookie will strive to get out of his slump in Week 12 versus the Dolphins.
NOVEMBER 22, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Catches conversion Sunday Marshall didn't catch either of his two targets but hauled in a two-point conversion in Sunday's 34-10 win over the Cardinals.
Impact Marshall caught at least three passes in each of his first three games, but he's seen his production flat line since then. The rookie hasn't hauled in a pass in two games since returning from a concussion, but Marshall at least helped with his successful conversion Sunday.
NOVEMBER 15, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Out of concussion protocol Marshall cleared the concussion protocol Thursday, making him available to return Sunday versus the Patriots, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports.
Impact Marshall missed the last two games after taking a massive hit from Vikings safety Xavier Woods in Week 6. Prior to the early exit, Marshall actually was increasing his share of the Panthers' offensive snaps through the first five games of his career, going from 52 percent in the season opener to 76 percent by Week 5. Marshall only produced a 13-107-0 line on 20 targets during that five-game stretch, but the playing time was an encouraging sign that regular production was possible. He'll slot in behind DJ Moore and Robby Anderson moving forward.
NOVEMBER 4, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Back to full participation Marshall (concussion) practiced in full Wednesday, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports.
Impact Marshall remains in the protocol for head injuries, but considering his activity level to begin Week 9 prep he's closing in on gaining clearance from an independent neurologist to return to action. He's been sidelined the past two games due to a concussion, but his absence hasn't had a trickle-down effect on Shi Smith or Alex Erickson, who have combined for one catch and three targets during that stretch.
NOVEMBER 3, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Remains absent in Week 8 Marshall (concussion) won't play Sunday against the Falcons, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.
Impact Marshall was able to practice in limited fashion Friday, but he'll be sidelined for a second consecutive game by the concussion he suffered in Week 6. Shi Smith and Alex Erickson will continue to vie for snaps in three-receiver sets alongside DJ Moore and Robby Anderson, though their roles aren't expected to be fruitful with Sam Darnold struggling to connect with any receivers besides Moore on a consistent basis. Marshall will look to return to action in Week 9 against the Patriots.
OCTOBER 29, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Out again Thursday Marshall (concussion) remained sidelined at Thursday's practice.
Impact The wide receiver has yet to practice since suffering a concussion in Week 6 against the Vikings. He still has to clear concussion protocol before he can return to game action and appears unlikely to suit up Sunday against the Falcons. If Marshall remains out in Week 8, Keith Kirkwood and Shi Smith will garner more snaps once again.
OCTOBER 28, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Misses practice Marshall (concussion) didn't practice Wednesday, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.
Impact The rookie entered concussion protocol Week 6 and missed a Week 7 loss to the Giants. With No. 4 receiver Brandon Zylstra (hamstring) on injured reserve, Keith Kirkwood and Shi Smith both got playing time in Marshall's absence, combining for seven targets and 49 snaps. It could be the same deal again this Sunday at Atlanta if Marshall can't clear protocol by the end of the week.
