Broncos call up Hemingway, put Heuerman on IR
The Broncos (5-6), who visit the Bengals (5-6) this weekend, promoted Hemingway from their practice squad Tuesday when they placed Jeff Heuerman on injured reserve.
Heuerman broke three ribs and bruised a lung in the Broncos’ 24-17 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.
Heuerman was in the midst of a breakout season, posting career highs in catches (31) and yards (281) while scoring twice in his fourth NFL season. He’s set to become a free agent after this season.
Heuerman joined fellow tight ends Jake Butt and Troy Fumagalli on IR. Butt blew out his left knee in a special teams practice in September and rookie Troy Fumagalli has missed all season with a sports hernia.
Case Keenum’s tight end targets now consist of Matt LaCosse , who scored his first career touchdown Sunday, Brian Parker and Hemingway, who joined the Broncos’ practice squad on Oct. 10 after competing with the Los Angeles Rams in training camp.
The Rams selected Hemingway in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL draft out of South Carolina State. He played in eight games his rookie season and missed last season with a leg injury he sustained in a preseason game.
The Broncos also signed three players to their practice squad: D-lineman Caushaud Lyons, tight end Tim Semisch and O-lineman Dan Skipper, and they designated tackle Andreas Knappe as practice squad/injured reserve.
