In line to again lead backfield Davis is again expected to lead the Carolina backfield Thursday night with Christian McCaffrey (ankle) not likely to be activated for the contest, David Newton of ESPN reports.

Impact Davis may be coming off his most lackluster fantasy effort since officially taking over for McCaffrey in Week 3, but he'll draw an opponent Thursday night he's already had tremendous success against this season. When Davis and the Panthers squared off against Atlanta in Week 5, he carried the ball 16 times for 89 yards, adding in nine catches for 60 yards and a score. This could very well be the last time Davis has a lead role, however, with McCaffrey expected to be back in action Week 9 in Kansas City. Davis has proven to be a plenty capable replacement for this year's consensus No. 1 fantasy draft pick, however, and could very well still see a handful of touches per game as McCaffrey is eased back in.

Stymied by Saints in loss Davis rushed just seven times for 12 yards and secured all five targets for 24 yards in the Panthers' 27-24 loss to the Saints on Sunday.

Impact Davis encountered his toughest matchup on the ground yet during his starting tenure in place of Christian McCaffrey (IR, ankle), averaging 1.7 yards per carry after going for just 2.9 yards per rush versus the Bears in Week 6. Davis did offer some serviceable contributions through the air in full-point PPR formats, but overall it was a disappointing fantasy performance when measured against some of the 27-year-old's previous outings. McCaffrey reportedly has an outside chance of returning for Thursday night's Week 8 divisional matchup against the Falcons, but short of that goal he's very likely to be ready for a Week 9 battle against the Chiefs on Nov. 8. Consequently, Davis may have only one more opportunity to serve in a lead-back role.

Impact Davis was spotted in a green non-contact jersey earlier Wednesday, which seemed to be a result of the running back limping off the field a few times during Sunday's loss to the Bears. In the end, though, he handled every practice rep to start Week 7 prep, setting himself up for his usual heavy workload this coming Sunday at New Orleans.

Impact Davis reportedly limped off the field a couple times during Sunday's 23-16 loss to the Bears, though he still managed to take 20 touches and play 88 percent of offensive snaps. While he'll presumably be listed on the Week 7 injury report, Davis should have a good chance to play Sunday in New Orleans. Trenton Cannon is the only other tailback on the Carolina roster, though Curtis Samuel did take some backfield snaps prior to missing the Week 6 loss with a knee injury. Samuel also wore a non-contact jersey for Wednesday's practice.

Impact It was an off day for Davis, as he was contained to a measly 2.9 yards-per-carry average by a Chicago defense that entered Sunday allowing 4.6 YPC to opposing backs. The 27-year-old RB also committed a giveaway against his former team, getting the ball punched out by Eddie Jackson on a third-quarter carry. Worst yet, Davis' three receiving yards were his lowest in any game this season in which he's played at least four offensive snaps. Since Christian McCaffrey (ankle) initially went down Week 2, Davis had averaged 7.5 receptions and 51.5 receiving yards per game. He may see a significant dip to his offensive role if McCaffrey is able to return Week 7 against the Saints, though the star was eligible to come off IR entering Sunday's contest and remained inactive.

Impact The 27-year-old back averaged just 3.5 yards per carry in his first start of the season against the Chargers, but he's improved markedly in that regard with 5.4 yards per attempt the past two weeks against the Cardinals and Falcons. Davis' pass-catching production has been outstanding since Christian McCaffrey went down with an ankle injury Week 2 against the Buccaneers, as he's accumulated 30 receptions for 206 yards and two touchdowns in the All-Pro's absence. McCaffrey is now eligible to come off injured reserve following a three-week absence, but it remains to be seen if he will be ready to return to game action against the Bears in Week 6.
