Impact Carter, who was signed to the active roster from the practice squad Monday, now faces a significant backfield opportunity with Adam Schefter of ESPN reporting that Benson will miss 4-to-6 weeks, and James Conner (foot) already out for the year. Head coach Jonathan Gannon said "we'll see how the week goes" when asked whether Carter or Demercado will start Sunday's matchup against the Titans, suggesting that reps remains up for grabs. Carter appeared in three regular-season games with the Cardinals in 2024, in which span he logged 35 carries for 131 yards (3.7 YPC) and one score, while securing all 11 of his targets for 57 yards. In theory, Carter projects more for early-down work while Demercado is more suited to a pass-catching role, but if either tailback demonstrates a hot hand they could secure the No. 1 gig until Benson returns.

Cards place Trey Benson on injured reserve with knee injury; running back could return this season

The Arizona Cardinals have placed running back Trey Benson on injured reserve because of a knee injury

Signs to active roster The Cardinals signed Carter off their practice squad Monday.
Impact With James Conner (foot) expected to miss the remainder of the year, Carter's signing adds much needed backfield depth. The North Carolina product was elevated for the Week 4 loss to the Seahawks, rushing once for one yard over just four offensive snaps. He's expected to continue playing behind both Trey Benson and Emari Demercado in the Arizona's Week 5 matchup against the Titans.

Moves back to practice squad Carter reverted to the Cardinals' practice squad Friday, per the NFL's transaction log.
Impact Carter was elevated from the practice squad for the first time this season in the wake of James Conner's season-ending foot injury. However, Carter logged just four snaps on offense and one play on special teams during Thursday's 23-20 loss to the Seahawks, and his only carry for one yard on third down in the middle of the second quarter was followed by a Blake Gillikin punt. Trey Benson (37 of 67 offensive snaps) and Emari Demercado (26) handled the bulk of the backfield reps, with the former turning 13 touches into 54 yards from scrimmage and the latter recording 21 total yards and a receiving TD on his four touches. While Carter can be elevated two more times, he doesn't appear to be an immediate candidate to contribute to the Cardinals' running game.

Jumps to active roster The Cardinals elevated Carter from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of Thursday's game against the Seahawks.
Impact Carter didn't make Arizona's 53-man roster out of training camp but found himself back on the practice squad, where he spent the first three games of the campaign. With James Conner (foot) on injured reserve and out for the season, Carter will join Emari Demercado and Bam Knight as backfield options behind new No. 1 RB Trey Benson. When both Conner and Benson were banged-up Weeks 17 and 18 of last season, Carter racked up 30 carries for 113 yards and one touchdown and gathered in all six targets for 27 yards.

Signed to Cards' practice squad The Cardinals signed Carter to the practice squad Thursday, Zach Gershman of the team's official site reports.
Impact Carter was unable to crack the Cardinals' 53-man roster Tuesday, but the 2021 fourth-rounder will stay in Arizona as a member of the team's practice squad. He spent most of 2024 on the Cardinals' practice squad but played in the last three games of the regular season, logging 35 carries for 131 yards and a touchdown along with 11 catches (on as many targets) for 57 yards.

Gets cut by Cardinals The Cardinals released Carter on Tuesday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
Impact In nine games with the Cardinals over the last two seasons, both of which he worked with offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, Carter turned 57 carries into 280 yards (4.9 YPC) and one touchdown and 20 catches (on 22 targets) into 90 yards and another TD. While those numbers are respectable, he and fellow RB DeeJay Dallas didn't make the cut after the preseason, while Emari Demercado and Zonovan Knight did behind the top duo of James Conner and Trey Benson. Carter can sign with any team but may end up back on Arizona's practice squad, where he spent most of the 2024 campaign.

Efficient on ground in loss Carter rushed five times for 47 yards and brought in one of three targets for minus-6 yards in the Cardinals' 20-10 preseason win over the Raiders on Saturday night.
Impact Carter gained 38 yards on one carry, but his performance was still a marked improvement over the 10 yards he netted on eight carries last Saturday night in the second preseason game against the Broncos. The veteran back is battling fellow veterans like DeeJay Dallas and Emari Demercado for a spot in the latter portion of the Cardinals' depth chart, and it remains to be seen if he's done enough to get past cutdown day after doing little on the ground over the first two preseason contests.

AUGUST 21 • AZCARDINALS.COM
Heavy workload in preseason loss Carter rushed eight times for 10 yards and brought in all five targets for 19 yards in the Cardinals' 27-7 preseason loss to the Broncos on Saturday night.
Impact Carter was the first running back in the game for Arizona and logged the first touch from scrimmage, gaining three yards. The veteran back also made his usual impact as a receiver, but although he saw a heavy workload over the last two games of the 2024 regular season due to injuries in the Cardinals' running game, Carter is seemingly facing an uphill battle to hold on to a roster spot this summer. Trey Benson, a 2024 third-round pick, is expected to have a much bigger role in his second campaign, while Emari Demercado is a more explosive runner that can also serve as an effective pass-catching option out of the backfield.
