May be elevated Monday Carter is an option to be elevated from the practice squad ahead of Monday's game at Dallas, but coach Jonathan Gannon announced Saturday that Bam Knight will be the starting runni...
Impact The Cardinals have had a revolving door in the backfield this season due to a series of injuries, namely to James Conner (foot, out for the season) and Trey Benson (knee, currently on IR). Emari Demercado (ankle) is set to play for the first time since Week 6, but he's the only other RB on the active roster ahead of Week 9 action. Carter is the obvious name to be elevated Monday afternoon, but even if he suits up and mixes in with Knight and Demercado, his returns (2.8 yards per carry) this season have left much to be desired.
NOVEMBER 1, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Taking first RB reps this week Carter, who currently is on the Cardinals' practice squad, took the initial running back reps in practice Thursday and Friday, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.
Impact Following Arizona's Week 8 bye, the team released Carter on Monday and then re-signed him to the practice squad one day later. The Cardinals still have two elevations to use on Carter this season, so the transactions seemingly were procedural to open up a spot on the active roster for one of the players currently on a reserve list. Elsewhere in the backfield, Emari Demercado (ankle) returned to practice this week in a limited capacity, indicating that he's closing in on his first game action since Week 6. The order of RBs in practice has been Carter, Demercado and then Bam Knight, so the team may be preparing to run with the backfield of Carter on early downs and Demercado in obvious passing situations Monday in Dallas, assuming the latter is able to suit up.

Returns to Arizona's practice squad The Cardinals announced Tuesday that Carter was re-signed to the practice squad, Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Following a Week 8 bye, the Cardinals released Carter from the 53-man roster on Monday, but the fifth-year running back will end up sticking around in the organization. At the moment, Arizona has only two running backs on its roster -- Bam Knight and Emari Demercado (ankle), the latter of whom sat out the Week 7 loss to the Packers -- so Carter seemingly has a good chance of being elevated from the practice squad to add depth to the backfield ahead of Monday's game in Dallas. Knight still projects to serve as Arizona's lead option on the ground in Week 9, though Carter will likely have a role in the game plan if he's elevated.

Back with Arizona Coach Jonathan Gannon said Carter will take part in Tuesday's practice, indicating that the Cardinals at least have re-signed him to the practice squad, Darren Urban of the team's...
Impact On the heels of a Week 8 bye, Arizona released Carter on Monday, which likely was a procedural move in order to open up a spot on the active roster due to the imminent activation from the reserve/PUP list of rookie first-round pick Walter Nolen (calf). Carter has been serving as the No. 2 RB behind Bam Knight in the team's last two games with James Conner (foot) out for the season and Trey Benson (knee) on IR. During that two-game stretch, Carter combined for 100 yards from scrimmage on 20 touches.

Expected back with Arizona The Cardinals intend to re-sign Carter in the near future, Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Carter was released earlier Monday, but it sounds as if it was some sort of procedural move by Arizona, and the veteran running back appears to be sticking around. Carter's playing time has dipped in consecutive games, and he rushed just seven times for 11 scoreless yards in Arizona's pre-bye loss to the Colts in Week 7. Carter holds very little fantasy value, as Bam Knight has passed him on the depth chart.

Released by Cardinals The Cardinals have released Carter, Bo Brack of GoPHNX.com reports.
Impact With Trey Benson (knee) not eligible to return from IR until Week 10, Bam Knight is currently the Cardinals' top healthy RB, though it's possible Emari Demercado (ankle) -- who was inactive in Week 7 -- could return to action next Monday against the Cowboys. Additionally, D'Ernest Johnson and Jermar Jefferson represent possible Week 9 practice squad elevations.

Logs nine touches Sunday Carter turned seven carries into 11 yards and caught both of his targets for 25 yards during Sunday's 27-23 loss to the Packers.
Impact For the second week in a row, Bam Knight had a slight lead on Carter in terms of offensive snaps (34-28), and the former also was far more effective with his reps, notching 57 yards on 14 rushes while hauling in three of four targets for seven yards. With fellow RB Emari Demercado (ankle) inactive, even practice-squad elevation D'Ernest Johnson got in the mix, seeing 14 snaps and taking one carry of no yards. Such a breakdown of work between Knight and Carter will continue for as long as Trey Benson (knee) is sidelined, which is expected to last beyond the Cardinals' Week 8 bye for at least one more game.

OCTOBER 19, 2025 • SPORTINGNEWS.COM
Solid in complementary role Sunday Carter rushed nine times for 34 yards and brought in two of five targets for 30 yards in the Cardinals' 31-27 loss to the Colts on Sunday.
Impact Prior to the game, it was announced the Bam Knight would serve in the lead-back role, theoretically relegating Carter to complementary duties. However, Carter ended up lagging just two carries behind Knight while equaling his teammate's rushing yardage, and he provided a nice chunk play as a receiver with a 16-yard catch. Although Knight did score a short rushing touchdown, the gap between the two players doesn't seem to be much heading into a Week 7 home matchup against the Packers next Sunday afternoon.

Expected to lose touches to Bam Knight Bam Knight is expected to take on a bigger workload out of the Cardinals backfield alongside Carter and Emari Demercado in Sunday's game against the Colts, Adam Schefter of ESPN re...
Impact Per Schefter, in a game that QB Jacoby Brissett is expected to start in place of Kyler Murray (foot), Knight -- who logged four carries in last week's 22-21 loss to the Titans -- is expected to see an expanded role, with Schefter suggesting that Knight is on track to work ahead of Carter, who carried 18 times versus Tennessee. With that context in mind, and with Demercado (three carries in Week 5) also in the mix, Carter profiles as a hit-or-miss fantasy lineup option Sunday.

Impact Carter turned 23 touches into 73 scrimmage yards and a touchdown in the Cardinals' Week 5 loss to the Titans. Head coach Jonathan Gannon said Emari Demercado won't be punished for his costly goal-line fumble, so Demercado will likely continue to mix in for passing situations, while Bam Knight is on hand as the third-string backfield option while James Conner (foot) and Trey Benson (knee) are on injured reserve. Conner's out for the season, while Benson won't be back any earlier than Week 10 against the Seahawks.

Dominates opportunity Carter rushed the ball 18 times for 51 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 22-21 loss to the Titans. He added five receptions on five targets for 22 yards.
Impact Carter was expected to step into an expanded role with both James Conner (foot) and Trey Benson (knee) sidelined, though it was unclear exactly how touches would be distributed. Carter resoundingly served as the lead back for Arizona, accounting for 23 total touches, while Emari Demercado and Bam Knight combined for nine. He wasn't particularly efficient with the touches, though he did manage to find the end zone on a one-yard plunge early in the first quarter. Carter's involvement as a receiver was also particularly notable, as Demercado was projected to take over duties as the primary pass catcher out of the backfield. Carter looks to have reliable volume heading into a Week 6 matchup against the Colts, though this situation could remain fluid.
