INJURIES

Drew Ogletree - Garners first TE target Saturday Ogletree failed to bring in his lone target in Saturday's preseason win over the Cardinals.
Impact Ogletree was the first tight end targeted by fill-in starter Sam Ehlinger in Saturday's exhibition. Kylen Granson and Mo Alie-Cox did not suit up for this contest while Jelani Woods (toe) suffered a minor injury against Arizona. Ogletree figures to still be in the mix for an unsettled tight end depth chart in Indianapolis this season.
AUGUST 18, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Jason Bean - Rushes for TD in preseason win Bean was 7-of-9 passing for 94 yards with an interception in Saturday's preseason win over Arizona. He also had four carries for 14 yards, including a one-yard touchdown run.
Impact Bean has 4.55 speed and there's been talk that he could be converted to wide receiver, but he's played quarterback for the Colts in the preseason. He's listed as QB/WR on the team's official web site. He's only nominally in the running for a roster spot as the Colts may decide to develop him or change his position on the practice squad.
AUGUST 18, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Matt Gay - Missing field goals in preseason Gay missed field goal attempts from 56 and 64 yards in Saturday's preseason win over Arizona. He converted all three extra-point attempts.
Impact Gay is just 1-for-4 in field-goal attempts in two preseason games, also missing a 36-yard attempt in the first preseason game. His only make is from 26 yards. We wouldn't be too worried about missing two field goals longer than 50 yards, but Gay signed one of the largest contracts in the league for a kicker (four-year, $22.5 million deal) to make long kicks.
AUGUST 18, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Evan Hull - Gains 31 yards on five touches Hull had four carries for 26 yards and caught his only target for five yards in Saturday's preseason win over Arizona.
Impact Hull was the second player to receive a carry for Indianapolis behind Tyler Goodson (6-35-1) despite taking reps ahead of his backfield mate during practice this week. Projected No. 2 back Trey Sermon remains sidelined with the hamstring injury he suffered in the Colts' preseason opener, upgrading the battle for third on the depth chart to a competition to be Jonathan Taylor's primary backup. Hull, Goodson and possibly Zavier Scott (11-55-1) may compete for multiple spots on the roster heading into the final week of the exhibition schedule.
AUGUST 18, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Tyler Goodson - Maintains edge in position battle Goodson took six carries for 35 yards and touchdown (no targets) in Saturday's 21-13 preseason win over Arizona.
Impact Goodson was the first back used sans Jonathan Taylor (coach's decision) for the second game in a row this preseason. The 23-year-old responded with touchdowns in both exhibition contests. Fellow backup Evan Hull continues to play well behind Goodson on the depth chart, while projected No. 2 back Trey Sermon (hamstring) remains without a timeline to return. If Goodson holds pole position following next week's preseason finale, then he may find himself serving as Taylor's primary backup come Week 1. The 5-foot-9 speedster out of Iowa would actually complement the starter's bruising north-south style of running better than Sermon, who better matches Taylor's physical build without the superstar's ball skills.
AUGUST 18, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Jelani Woods - Appears to avoid serious injury Woods' toe injury isn't expected to be serious, and he could play in the Colts' final preseason contest against Cincinnati on Thursday, Nate Atkins of The Indianapolis Star reports...
Impact Woods didn't return to Saturday's preseason game against Arizona after injuring his toe in the first half, but he may be out of the woods in terms of a long-term absence. If he suits up Thursday for Indianapolis' final exhibition matchup, it could be his chance to make a case for a roster spot as the team's No. 3 tight end over Drew Ogletree.
AUGUST 18, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Tanor Bortolini - Hurts toe in second preseason game Bortolini suffered a toe injury Saturday in the Colts' preseason win over Arizona, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports.
Impact Bortolini didn't end up returning after the injury, but he said after the game that he doesn't think the issue will keep him out long, per Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star. The rookie fourth-round pick is expected to be a backup on the offensive line during his first NFL campaign.

Colts backups rush for 3 scores to beat mistake-prone Cardinals 21-13 in preseason

Jason Bean, Tyler Goodson and Zavier Scott each rushed for one touchdown to help the Indianapolis Colts hold off the mistake-prone Arizona Cardinals 21-13 in a battle of backups
AUGUST 18, 2024 • Associated Press
Josh Sills - Ruled out Saturday Sills (ankle) won't return to Saturday's preseason game against the Cardinals, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports.
Impact Sills hurt his ankle in the first quarter, and though he was later spotted running on the sidelines, he won't return to the exhibition game. The offensive guard is competing for a spot on the Colts' 53-man roster, so it could be critical for him to return to health in time for the team's final preseason contest Thursday versus Cincinnati.
AUGUST 18, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Jelani Woods - Hurts toe in preseason game Woods suffered a toe injury in Saturday's exhibition contest against the Cardinals and has been ruled out from returning, Nate Atkins of The Indianapolis Star reports.
Impact Woods started the contest at tight end for the Colts but didn't get much of an opportunity to play due to the injury. It's a tough break for the tight end, as he missed all of 2023 due to injuries to both hamstrings. He's been competing with Drew Ogletree and others for a depth role behind Kylen Granson and Mo Alie-Cox, but Woods' chance of making the 53-man roster would be harmed if the toe issue proves to be more than minor.
AUGUST 18, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
JuJu Brents - Exits game with nose injury Brents has been ruled out from returning to Saturday's exhibition contest against Arizona due to a nose injury, Nate Atkins of The Indianapolis Star reports.
Impact Brents started and played most of the first quarter before getting hurt. The cornerback was ruled out early in the second period and finished the game with one assisted tackle. Brents missed Indianapolis' first preseason matchup due to a shoulder injury but returned to practice this week. If healthy, he's slated to start at left corner for the Colts in 2024.
AUGUST 18, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Josh Sills - Hurts ankle in preseason game Sills suffered an ankle injury in Saturday's exhibition contest against Arizona and has been deemed questionable to return, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports.
Impact Sills was injured in the first period and isn't certain to return, though Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports that the offensive lineman was up and running on the sideline between quarters. Sills is competing for a spot on the 53-man roster as depth at the offensive guard position.
AUGUST 17, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Trey Sermon - Misses practice Sermon (hamstring) did not practice Thursday, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
Impact Sermon left Indy's first preseason game Sunday with a hamstring injury. The severity of the injury isn't clear, but it's not a good sign that he hasn't returned to practice this week.
AUGUST 16, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Joe Flacco - Not expected to play Saturday Flacco isn't expected to play in Saturday's preseason game against the Cardinals, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports.
Impact Flacco is expected to sit along with the rest of the Colts' starters. The 39-year-old did play last week against Denver, completing 3-of-5 passes for 28 yards on his lone series of work. Flacco has the Colts' QB2 job sewn up behind Anthony Richardson. Look for plenty of Sam Ehlinger this weekend for Indianapolis.
AUGUST 16, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Michael Pittman Jr. - Not slated to play Saturday Coach Shane Steichen said Thursday that Pittman won't suit up for Saturday's preseason game versus the Cardinals, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports.
Impact Along with Pittman, the rest of the Colts' starters and No. 2 signal-caller Joe Flacco won't be available for the team's second exhibition. Assuming Josh Downs (ankle) also doesn't play, Indy's available wide receivers figure to be rookie second-rounder Adonai Mitchell, Alec Pierce and Ashton Dulin (hamstring, if available), among others. In four pro seasons to date, Pittman has two 1,000-yard tallies on his resume, and he's posted 14 receiving touchdowns in 49 regular-season contests the last three campaigns.
AUGUST 15, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Ethan Fernea - Reverts to IR Fernea (undisclosed) went unclaimed Thursday after getting waived/injured by the Colts on Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Impact The wide receiver now has to reach an injury settlement with the Colts to have a chance to play in 2024. Fernea appeared in three games and on two offensive snaps for Indianapolis in 2023 but did not catch a pass.
AUGUST 15, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Jonathan Taylor - Not in line to play Saturday Coach Shane Steichen said Thursday that Taylor won't suit up for Saturday's preseason game against the Cardinals, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports.
Impact The same can be said for the rest of the Colts' starters and No. 2 quarterback Joe Flacco. With Taylor in street clothes, Trey Sermon (hamstring, if available), Tyler Goodson, Evan Hull, Zavier Scott and Demetric Felton will be the candidates to work out of Indianapolis' backfield. As for Taylor, he's coming off back-to-back injury-riddled campaigns in which he averaged 90.4 yards from scrimmage per game and scored 12 total touchdowns in 21 regular-season contests.

Former Eagles coordinators reunite as head coaches at Cardinals-Colts joint practices

Jonathan Gannon knew Shane Steichen was destined to be an NFL head coach almost from the moment they joined the Philadelphia Eagles staff in 2021
AUGUST 15, 2024 • Associated Press
Evan Hull - Working as No. 2 running back Hull took the majority of No. 2 running back snaps during Wednesday's practice with Trey Sermon (hamstring) sidelined, Paul Bretl of USA Today reports.
Impact Hull has a chance to build some momentum at training camp after an impressive showing in Indianapolis' preseason opener, the same game in which Sermon departed early due to a hamstring injury. Thus far Sermon had worked as the clear No. 2 man behind Jonathan Taylor, but Wednesday's practice seems like an indication that Hull, one of the better pass-catchers in the Colts' backfield, could be favored for the No. 3 gig over Tyler Goodson.

Derek Rivers - Catches on with Indianapolis Rivers (biceps) signed with the Colts on Wednesday.
Impact Rivers didn't play a snap in 2023, and he finished the season on the Colts' practice squad injured reserve due to a biceps injury. He last saw NFL action in 2021 with the Texans, when he recorded nine tackles (seven solo), including 1.0 sacks, across five regular-season games.
